| A Companion to the Great Western Schism (1378-1417) (Repost) Posted: 29 Jul 2014 09:50 AM PDT A Companion to the Great Western Schism (1378-1417) by Joëlle Rollo-Koster; Thomas M. Izbicki Publisher: BRILL | September 30, 2009 | ISBN: 9004162771 | Pages: 472 | PDF | 3.0 MB The division of the Church or Schism that took place between 1378 and 1417 had no precedent in Christianity. No conclave since the twelfth century had acted as had those in April and September 1378, electing two concurrent popes. This crisis was neither an issue of the authority claimed by the pope and the Holy Roman Emperor nor an issue of authority and liturgy. The Great Western Schism was unique because it forced upon Christianity a rethinking of the traditional medieval mental frame. It raised question of personality, authority, human fallibility, ecclesiastical jurisdiction and taxation, and in the end responsibility in holding power and authority. This collection presents the broadest range of experiences, center and periphery, clerical and lay, male and female, Christian and Muslim. Theology, including exegesis of Scripture, diplomacy, French literature, reform, art, and finance all receive attention. |

| A Community Built on Words: The Constitution in History and Politics Posted: 29 Jul 2014 03:28 AM PDT A Community Built on Words: The Constitution in History and Politics by H. Jefferson Powell Publisher: University Of Chicago Press | September 15, 2002 | ISBN: 0226677230 | Pages: 261 | PDF | 3.7 MB H. Jefferson Powell offers a powerful new approach to one of the central issues in American constitutional thinking today: the problem of constitutional law's historicity, or the many ways in which constitutional arguments and outcomes are shaped both by historical circumstances and by the political goals and commitments of various actors, including judges. The presence of such influences is often considered highly problematic: if constitutional law is political and historical through and through, then what differentiates it from politics per se, and what gives it integrity and coherence? Powell argues that constitutional theory has as its (sometimes hidden) agenda the ambition of showing how constitutional law can escape from history and politics, while much constitutional history seeks to identify an historically true meaning of the constitutional text that, once uncovered, can serve as a corrective to subsequent deviations from that truth. |
